Liriope is a great low, grass like plant from East Asia. It can be called Lily turf or Monkey Grass. It is not a grass nor a Lily. It is used in the landscape for its evergreen foliage. It can spread with runners, some varieties are more aggressive than others so you want to make sure you take into consideration the placement of your Liriope.
It is a wonderful option for your landscape as it requires little care, has a grass like appearance yet does not need to be mowed. It is however a good idea to cut it back in February to remove the yellowed tips from winter. It blooms in July or August with lavender, purple or white spikes. Clusters of blackish berry like fruit follow the flowers.
It can be used as a ground cover and mass planted or as an edging plant. It is tough and can grow in either sun or shade. SO, if you want that patch of grass without having to mow, consider LIRIOPE!
